#6 Openings, closings + pop-ups
Welcome to the sixth issue of this newsletter! While we move towards the fall season, there are plenty of options for outdoor dining and day trips in the Berkshires, Capital Region, and Hudson Valley and beyond. This week, I share some good food news and some openings in the Berkshires and some pop-ups in the Capital Region.
In the Berkshires:
There's a new donut shop coming to the Berkshires! In Adams, Shire Donuts will be offering made-to-order donuts with "hundreds" of build-your-own topping combinations. The opening date is TBD at the moment but make sure to follow them on Facebook for updates.
In downtown Lenox, Pizzeria Boema is the sister restaurant to Frankie's Italian restaurant. Chef Roman (of Frankie's) has been trained by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (VPN) in the birthplace of pizza, Napoli, Italy. [That's some pizza knowledge] Lots of vegan options here, which is exciting to see.
I know many New Englanders have opinions about cider donuts, but if you're in the Berkshires, Hilltop Orchards is a nice experience. Not only can you go apple picking and eat cider donuts as the property is also a winery. It's a good fall day trip.
In Great Barrington, Marjoram + Roux has opened offering breakfast, lunch, pastries, provisions, and more! The space was formerly home to H.R. Zeppelin, which will still be available for purchase. Check out their Instagram for more.
The Capital Region:
The crew at Chewish is having their first pop-up at Pint Sized in Albany next week! They will be set up outside and cooking up good eats, including gluten-free and vegan dumplings.
Another pop-up in downtown Albany: 3Fish Cafe has Food by JoJo Wednesday - Saturday 10:00 - 3:00, and Strawberry Snail's vegan donuts are available Wednesday - Saturday🍂 You can order in person or online, eat at home or in the park or on their patio
If you're into mochi cakes and custom cookies, check out Brown Butter Bakery in Troy, a licensed home baker, Yun Mi makes all sorts of treats & mochi cakes. You can find these treats at Sunhee's Farm & Kitchen & Buhrmaster Farms in Scotia.
What I'm cooking/eating/reading:
In addition to writing my weekly newsletter, I read quite a few on a range of topics. Here are a few food-centric ones that are some of my faves:
For those who are fans of cookbooks, Stained Page News from Paula Forbes is the one for you. "If you really want to geek out about cookbooks, you have come to the right place."
If you are interested in foodways or food history, check out Smart Mouth, the newsletter powered by the podcast of the same name by Katherine Spiers.
For a calm, soothing content, Doomsday Bowls is a semi-regular newsletter with smoothie bowl recipes and simply styling…I realize I may not be explaining it well, so here's their recipe for a Masala Chai Bowl as an example.
If you have a spot you think should be featured, food news to share, or a great food day trip from the Berkshires or Capital Region, please email me at thestephanita@gmail.com or message me on Instagram at StephanitaEats.
